New Nursery

Our Nursery’s Approach to Delivering High-Quality Early Years Provision
Our nursery delivers an exceptional early years experience aligned with The Island Learning Trust vision: '...to be the best we can be...'. It reflects the ethos of Halfway Houses Primary School, where every child, irrespective of ability, background, or starting point, fulfils their potential with confidence. We believe children learn best when learning is exciting, challenging, creative, collaborative, practical, reflective, and meaningful.
Guiding Principles
Our nursery upholds the four EYFS principles:
- Unique Children – Every child is capable and full of potential.
- Positive Relationships – Strong bonds with caregivers and peers build confidence and security.
- Enabling Environments – Inspiring indoor and outdoor spaces encourage exploration and independence.
- Learning and Development – Activities are tailored to individual needs, fostering curiosity and resilience.
Structured Play-Based Learning
We provide a curriculum rooted in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), balancing structured play with opportunities for exploration. Activities nurture curiosity, creativity, and independence while developing communication, literacy, numeracy, and social skills.
Enabling Environments
Indoor Learning
Our indoor environment is language-rich and creative, supporting all seven areas of learning. We:
- Use talk-rich play to encourage children to express themselves through imaginative role-play, collaborative storytelling, and conversation.
- Provide high-quality texts to inspire a love of storytelling, listening, and comprehension.
- Incorporate songs, rhymes, and games to develop phonemic awareness and embed essential language patterns.
- Offer sensory exploration, early reading activities, and collaborative games to build confidence and foundational skills in literacy and numeracy.
These approaches reflect our school values of Resilience, Optimism, Ambition, and Responsibility (ROAR), ensuring children grow as confident learners and responsible citizens.
Outdoor Learning (Forest School and OPAL Play)
Forest School is a distinctive feature of our nursery, complemented by OPAL play, which transforms outdoor spaces into rich learning environments. Together, these approaches:
- Promote confidence, self-esteem, and emotional well-being.
- Encourage risk-taking, problem-solving, and resilience through hands-on experiences such as building shelters, exploring wildlife, and growing plants.
- Provide open-ended play opportunities that foster creativity, independence, and social interaction.
- Embed purposeful communication during activities such as scavenger hunts and bug hotel building, supporting language development in real-world contexts.
Inclusive and Aspirational Ethos
Every child is supported to achieve their potential through high expectations and inspirational role models. Our ethos ensures that learning is purposeful and relevant, preparing children for lifelong success.
2. Targeted Support for Disadvantaged Children and Specific Groups
We are committed to equity and inclusion, ensuring every child thrives regardless of background or starting point. Our targeted support includes:
- Early Identification and Intervention: Highly skilled practitioners assess children’s needs promptly, enabling tailored strategies for those eligible for Early Years Pupil Premium, free school meals, or additional funding streams.
- Our staff are experienced in adapting provision to overcome barriers. Strategies include sensory play, visual supports, and structured routines, alongside specialist input where required.
- Speech and Language Expertise: Our trained staff deliver targeted interventions for children with communication delays, ensuring progress through individualised plans.
- Support for EAL Learners: We create language-rich environments, use visual aids, and incorporate bilingual resources to help children develop English while valuing their home language.
- Family Engagement: Strong partnerships with parents ensure continuity of support at home and school, supported by regular workshops and communication.
- Forest School as an Inclusive Tool: Outdoor learning provides a non-threatening, exploratory environment that supports confidence and self-esteem for all learners, particularly those with SEND or EAL.
